Salzburg, Austria

Warning: If you’re not a Sound of Music fan, please look away! (I’m actually listening to the soundtrack as I type this blog). I’ve loved this movie as long as I can remember. To this day, I watch it every year over the Christmas holiday, and if you’re feeling blue, it puts a smile on your face and a spring in your step!

Since we were in Innsbruck, I knew how close we were to Salzburg, where the Sound of Music movie was filmed in 1965 with one of my favorites, Julie Andrews. Zach and I were watching this movie, as one does when in Austria, and I quickly did some research and booked a reservation with Frauline Maria’s Sound of Music Bicycle Tour. I knew I might never be in Austria again, so I took an early train to Salzburg the next morning. I know!

I met my fellow riders and our tour guide, Robin, at the specified location, and realized that the bike I picked was the exact same bike I have at home…it was meant to be! Robin led us to all the major locations from the film and I had a smile plastered on my face the entire time! She also gave us some fun behind-the-scenes information.

At one point as we were riding along the bike trails, Robin brought out a speaker that played the entire movie soundtrack and also encouraged us to sing-along. Of course, I was thrilled and sang, “Doe, a deer, a female deer” out loud with 10 of my new Sound of Music friends! Any of you that are reading this that know me have no problem picturing this, I’m sure! Of course, the locals didn’t seem as thrilled. I also learned that in Austria the locals really don’t care for the movie. What?

One of my favorite memories was riding my bike down the road right before you get to the Von Trapp’s house and jumping up in the air and “trying” to kick my heels!

Here are a “few of my favorite things” on the tour:
